Named after a quick survey technique, photographing buildings from a car, the National Windshield Survey contains user-submitted contributions to our identification of resources from the recent past. All users are welcome to contribute to the ever-expanding database by clicking the "Add Entry" button. You may contribute resources that you have a wealth of information and photos of, or you may contribute those resources that you just happen to pass by on your everyday encounters. Each resource contains various levels of photographs and text, from in depth descriptions to basic characteristics. Listings can be accompanied by a map from which users can get directions to the resource. Some listings may be be part of a preservation case study and some may link out to other sites. Besides just identifying resources to let others know that they are out there, this survey provides an invaluable means of raising awareness of threatened resources. It is our hope that this ever-expanding section of our site will provide a context for your own preservation work, whether you are studying Geodesic Domes, Lustrons, Bowling Alleys, Restaurants, or structures from the Cold War era. |
